One of the best things about running The Adventures Of Soul Clap Podcast is finding new DJs I’ve never heard of before and shining a light on undiscovered talent. Our podcast is definitely not about hype, it’s about music, so when my friend Salathiel from the Bay sent me a smoothed out slow jam mix by his cousin William a few months back, I reached out to William to get him to bring his smooth sounds to mothership. The mix William turned in went beyond expectations and features a wide array of soulful new music from many artists I haven’t even heard of before. It’s summer time music for your heart and your head, so close your eyes, kick back and let the groove take you away…
William is originally from Boston (Mattapan), but he left in ’91 to go to college in Atlanta, where he began DJing, now he lives in Memphis where he’s getting his doctorate in philosophy. Here’s how describes his style: “Coming up in the ’80s and early ’90s (Golden Age of Hip-Hop) I have an old school approach to DJing. It was common for hip-hop DJs back then to play a little bit of everything, as long as it was hot (hip-hop, r&b, dancehall, house, rock, disco etc.). Hence, I played everything from hip-hop to rave/techno (depending on the crowd) and still spin a little bit of everything.” And about this mix: “The mixes I make now for Sala or otherwise usually depend on my mood. There was a lot of good new music I came across recently, so this mix is primarily some newer stuff.”
