Episode 138: Funk Rimini, Bounce Da Jam Vol. II

After way too long of a hiatus here at The Adventures Of Soul Clap we’re back with something special direct from Rimini, Italy. Bounce Da Jam Volume II, a personal tribute by Ricky Cardelli to the golden era of electro breakbeats, the mid 80’s. A special set of original tracks featuring Kambo, Oder and Crimson from the Funk Rimini Crew.

Some words from Ricky:

I was watching breakdancing videos on youtube every night, fascinated by the way the breaker feels the music, the way the funk explodes in his body. When Eli asked me to make a set for his podcast, the idea was to make a breakbeat mix, but i was looking at my record collection, and most of my electro breakbeat records were used for Mixology Radio “Funk in the Machine” Mix.

Then i started to look at my studio equipment, Roland 707, R8, a Korg Volca Beats (cheap 808!), JX3P, Akai Ax60 a Moog Rogue, Microkorg (cool vocoder!) a string machine, Yamaha Sy 77 and think, I’m in the 80’s! i can make Electro breakbeats and mix the songs! The first beat on the 707 and “Electro Rock” came out, and in two weeks the whole thing was done, Bounce.

Like in the first “Bounce da Jam”, I made every track to be beat-matched like in a DJ set, but without records; a real flow-working jam made with drum machines, synths and samples. This jam Is dedicated to all the B-Boys and B-Girls all over the world. Let’s B-B-B-Break!

Episode 133: The Interns present gravitational.WAVs

Here on the Adventures we always love to shine the light on young DJs with good taste, so when Colby (1/2 of The Interns) opened up our House of EFUNK party on Holy Ship with a gorgeous set of house, new disco and funk, we offered him a slot on right away.

“With Summer around the corner, the LA based DJ duo, The Interns, are looking forward to a slower pace and brighter days. After making the rounds at several West Coast festivals, including a two night stint at Coachella’s Silent Disco, The Interns are ready to kick back, relax, and enjoy the Southern California vibes they’ve come to know and love. To celebrate the impending solstice, they’ve compiled an all star roster of downtempo jams. Episode 129: Larse Gets Personal

Here on the Adventures of Soul Clap we don’t usually host a mix from a DJ we’ve never met in person. But when Till Von Sein sends a recommendation, you listen! When we put on this mix and heard the voice of The Pharcyde coming through our speakers we knew why Till had recommended Larse. Larse is another funky German with a serious house music hit making resumé, but you know here on the Adventures we encourage DJs to explore different territories. So he took us on a trip through many exotic places and spaces…

“I really wanted to do a mix with a bunch of my personal favorite records over the years. It’s not about dance, house, hip-hop or any other genre, it’s about the music and records that are a part of my life as a DJ over the last 23 years. And with this I got the chance to put those tracks in the mix, thank you for that!”

Episode 127: Bamboozle’s BBQ Jamz Volume 3

Happy Holidaze everyone! Whatever it is that you celebrate, we hope that this live recording of Eli’s 45 set from our BBQ at TV Lounge, Detroit back in September will get you in that festive spirit…

“I think I really started playing 45s by accident. Sure I had some reggae riddims on 7” from back in the day, but it wasn’t something I was integrating into Soul Clap sets. Then there was a dope edit I picked up at Turntable Lab back in 2009 that I used to play at The Marcy during warmups. Soon after we started touring Europe and getting to check out amazing record shops like OYE, Phonica and Rush Hour. These shops all had sections dedicated to 45s and I started finding amazing new and re-issued funk that was only available on 7”. Labels like PPU and … became essential purchases, but I also started finding old favorites and weird stuff on 7”. I remember finding a bunch of amazing R&B and soft rock jams at Gramaphone in Chicago and playing a really awkward after party set of only 45s later that night.

“The thing about 45s is that they’re much harder to mix then 12”s. The centers are loose and records are light so you really can’t touch them to adjust the speed. Plus I was playing really eclectic music, so the BPMs didn’t usually match up. 7” mini-sets were great for opening or closing the party, but not when we had to keep it moving. So it wasn’t until our DJ Kicks tour in 2011 when we started playing all night sets, open to close, that 45s became a regular part of our performances. I closed many of those nights with 45s and did a special 7”s of Pleasure set on Beats In Space Radio that’s worth checking.

“Over the next 4 years I kept growing my 7” collection. 45s are a great way to bring a diverse range of records on the road with out breaking my back. I can throw a bag of a hundred 45s over my shoulder and drop a set of funk, disco, hip-hop and reggae on vinyl, which is way more fun than playing classics digitally. But, I still hadn’t figured out how to really hold down my mixes. Then JT Donaldson invited me to play his 45 party in Dallas in March and everything changed! JT and his crew were mixing 45s seamlessly! He showed me Butter Rug 45 slipmats and extra heavy center weights which made mixing 7”s feel just like 12”s. As soon as I got home ordered my own slipmats and weighs and set about BPMing my entire 45 collection, the way I used to have my 12”s when we played open format clubs in the 2000’s. Finally I could confidently play a 45 set and rock the party.

“So for Bamboozle’s BBQ Jam 3 I present a LIVE recording from a real BBQ! The Soul Clap and Paxahau BBQ at TV Lounge in Detroit back in September. Sure there are still some skips and a little sloppiness, but it’s all mixed and it’s as diverse as my previous BBQ Jams. So weather your chilly up north and need to warm up by the fire or heading for summer down south and firing up your grill, this mix is for you.”

Thanks for listening,
-Bamboozle aka Eli Soul Clap

Episode 123: Till Von Sein’s Precious Podcast

Till Von Sein is one of our favorite Germans. We’ve been friends since 2008 when we brought him to Boston and he’s helped us along ever since our first euro tour in 2009. It’s hard to believe it’s 5 years since our first podcast from Till, but here we are. Till is celebrating the release of his second album, Precious. I asked him to describe the album and he said: “So the idea was to do an album in the way we grew up with the classic LP format. 45 minutes and i wanted it to be like a soul album, in our world though slow jams, floor jams, and everything in between. Timeless soulful music for the car, the sofa and a mature dancefloor.” It’s dope you should go get it!

For the mix he went super deep and soulful and funky. His dream if he were ever asked to do a mix for the classic radio station, KDAY in LA. Perfect for summer vibing.

Episode 120: Mo’funk

We love DJs that hustle to make a living. The unsung heroes who don’t get flown all over the world and share their music… YET. Back in Boston, that DJ was us. You’ve probably heard our stories about playing in shopping malls, department stores and local clubs, anything to pay the bills. If it weren’t for DJs who really care about music taking on these gigs, we’d be left listening to top 40 garbage at every turn.

Luckily for us there’s still DJs like Mo’funk holding it down. Mo is one Sydney’s most respected and eclectic talents. He was even the opening DJ on Jazzy Jeff’s Australia tour. But Mo’s experience goes beyond just his native Australia. He’s held down a summer residency at Ibiza’s original club, Pacha, for years and gained valuable experience. We even rocked a b2b hip-hop and funk set at our Misty Pool Party last summer on the island. His style spans genres and decades, but you can always count on Mo to bring that FUNK!

In his words:
“This mix is full of that summertime feel good music, made with love. Everything in my trademark style on this mix from hip-hop, to disco, funk and house cuts in this 80 minute Crew Love jam. Ibiza 2015 get ready!”
