is a FREE DOWNLOAD of one our most asked about tracks of the last year, the little ditty that first caught our attention and led to Mr. Monaco joining our happy family, the one that tells all our mom’s that we’re not gunna set the table, we’re gunna party til tomorrow is today! So get ready for 2013, we sure are 🙂
Nick Monaco’s “Naked Is My Nature EP” drops in January on Soul Clap Records.
During our recent visit to the homeland Chicago to play Noe & Fred’s Souvenir party we finally got a chance to hang with Phillip Stone. Many of you may already have this guy’s stuff, just check your iTunes and search for “Phil Edit” or “Phil’s Dub”, that’s where we first saw his name. For year’s Phil has built a name for himself getting his super-DJ-friendly edits of new heat and classic cuts (which he makes with Audacity!!! go figure) into the right hands. Plus with advanced mixing skill, extraordinary programing ability and a slew of high profile DJ gigs opening for the big boys in his home town, it is commonly noted that Phil Stone is Chicago’s best DJ. We’re real pumped to have his contribution to the Adventures of Soul Clap Podcast and seems very fitting to have Phil close out one hell of an amazing year! Closer was a hoserrrrrr 😉

This story goes all the way back to the middle of Boston’s unofficial Techno week (last Thursday), on September 20th. It was a very special day for a few reasons, namely because my girlfriend finally turned 18, so we could actually have sex legally and secondly and most importantly, it marked the day that I, Professor Chazshabaz Nizzle III saw Stevie Wonder LIVE in concert. The process by which I came upon these tickets is a combination of a heated last minute bidding war on Ebay and yours truely on his hands and knees begging Mom and Dad. I know, its low, but whatever I saw the man, and who knows, it could be the LAST TIME (gulp!!!).
The Boston show at Bank of America Pavillion (formally Harbor Lights) marked the end of Stevie “A Wonder Summer’s Night” tour. For a while there it seemed like Stevie was done with life on the road, but after his mom passed away last year, it seemed like a tour to commemorate her life and life in general was a good thing to do. Well, it WAS a good thing, in fact probably the BEST concert I have ever seen EVER, even better than SVEN AND RICHIE. Even a few hundred feet away, being in Stevies presence immediately brought tears to my eyes and once he starting to sing, man… FUCKING STEVIEWONDER!
I didnt know how to share the experience with all of you, so I figured the best thing to do would be to copy the set list since DJ’s tend to go gaga over lists of songs anyways… Oh, some of the tunes i didnt recognize, so I just wrote down some lyrics, if anyone wants to comment and fill in the blanks, please do so.
Here it goes:
1. Loves In Need of Love Today
2. Too High
3. Vision In My Mind
4. Living For The City
5. Jammin’ (Master Blaster)
6. cover of P-Funks Mothership Connection performed with a Talk Box
7. Higher Ground
8. Golden Lady
9. Ribbon In The Sky (Duet with his daughter)
11. All Is Fair In Love And War
12. Lately (ya, like the one Jodeci stole)
13. ??? (I think it was What The Fuss, but not sure)
14. ??? “true love forever mine”
15. ridiculously dope percussion break, so funk, so Africa, so Techno
16. Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing
17. Sign Sealed Delivered (the Stevie pretended to do it a country westen jam… such a comedian)
18. My Cherie Amour
19. For Once In My Life
20. ??? “time and time again”
21. All I Do
22. Boogie On Reggae Woman
23. Sir Duke
24. I Wish
25. Isn’t She Lovely
26. You Are The Sunshine Of My Life
WHEW!!! What a show.. so, how does this translate to Soul Clap? Well, here’s some fresh remixes/adaptations that shaped us and one attempt we made to shape Stevie!
Stevie Wonder – Too High (Bootleg Remix) DOWNLOAD DJ Heather played this record sometime a million years ago at a Tropical party back when I was living in L.A. Thought it was the jam then, and I’d still play it under the right circumstances now. Dope, funky and best of all totally Stevie! I can’t figure out who’s mix this is, but the record is a white label with “S W” in red stamp.
Stevie Wonder – Love Light In Flight (Gator Boots’ Fuel Injected Dub)
Lastly an edit we did a few months back. Love Light In Flight is such a dope jam. First heard this when Bomshot sampled it for his Bomb Johnson project. It was my home girl Booty Balls Bounce that pointed out that this jam was off the Woman in Red soundtrack which was written and produced entirely by Stevie himself. Still have yet to see this movie and I suppose so has Stevie (I know, I know, I love you Stevie more than life!)
We’ve been playing around with edits for awhile now and it’s finally time to start sharing. There was ridiculous response to the Todd Terje ROOTS&FUTURE post so hopefully yall are into what we’re doing on a similar style. All feedback is appreciated.
Stevie Wonder – Love Light (Gator Boots’ Fuel Injected Dub)
Oh yeah, btw this Re-Edit is dedicated to Abbacadabadale AKA Da Booty Bandit AKA Da Kooch AKA Abbafababulous AKA Watch Out NYC. She is the ORIGINAL “Woman In Red“. Werd…
I’m a little late on this, but the often mentioned D. Day had an interview with dance music legend (and one time Boston representative) Armand Van Helden last week in the Phoenix. It’s a great piece, with some choice Boston history (including the roots of the Loft and shouts to DJ Bruno) and some reflections on the new album Ghetto Blaster, which brings Armand as close to his hip-hop roots as he’s been since 1997’s often overlooked Sampleslaya album. Remember, this dude’s first releases were on party break institution AV8 Records. So in honor of the new album and also because I need to rip all my old vinyl, I think it’s time for an Armand Van Helden series, beginning right here, right now.
Armand Van Helden – CHA-CHA (The Loft Mix) DOWNLOAD
This is definitely one of my favorite Armand tracks of all time, partly because it was one of the first records I ever bought when it was reissued on Logic Records in 1996. This mix is off one of Armand’s first records, the Pirates of the Caribbean EP, which was released in 1992 and also has the distinction of being the first release on AV8. I love it, because it’s called The Loft Mix and it just breathes old-school Boston flavor. I have doubles of this EP so get at me if you want it.
Armand Van Helden – Spin The Bottle (Axis Mix) DOWNLOAD
Another mix named after a Boston club that’s also a Boston flavored banger. This was on the second Pirates of the Caribbean EP, which was also released in on AV8 after The Funky Shell Toes EP and The Buddha Baboons EP in 1993 (gota love all the crazy names – more on that in the next post). There are better tracks on this record, but I had to put the one named after a Boston landmark up. I have doubles of this EP too so if anyone wants a copy of the vinyl SHOUT!
Gator Boots’ Armand On AV8 Megamix DOWNLOAD
Between the 2 Pirates of the Caribbean EPs and The Funky Shell Toes EP (which is all hip-hop breaks) there are 7 Armand party breaks. The problem is that you just can’t really play most of them because they don’t hit quick enough and I never can decide which is better than the others. So I made a megamix.
Here is the trackslist:
I Can’t Wait (House Head & B-Boy Collaboration Mix)
I’m Searchin (Pass the Peace Mix)
Hurts A Little (Dorchester Bounce-Hall Mix)
You Won’t Getaway (Caps To Back Mix)
Stick-Em (That’s Fresh Mix)
Say Yeah (Shake & Break Mix)
A Deep Hip Hop Kinda Love (After Hours Mix)
