Larry Heard is a don. There’s not really any other way to describe the man behind Fingers Inc., Mr. Fingers and now Mr. White (pictured here with fellow Fingers Inc. Ron Wilson & Robert Owens in London 1989).
A Chicago native and the producer for Fingers Inc. Heard released a string of classics beginning in 1986 with “Bring Down The Walls” & “Mystery Of Love” a track that basically invented the deep house sound by adding blues, funk and jazz inluences to the house music spectrum. In 1988 he dropped his biggest hit “Can You Feel It”, which is still considered one of the best house tracks of all time.
Into the late 80’s Heard produced for Kym Mazelle (“Treat Me Right”) & Lil’ Louis (“Touch Me”) and remixed Adamski, Massive Attack & Electribe 101, before releasing a critically acclaimed album with poet Harry Dennis as The It (“On Top Of The World”). In 1992, as Mr. Fingers he released an album called “Introduction” on MCA records (the highlight track is “Closer” with Robert Owens), but the label never put out his follow up LP. From the mid 90’s on Heard helped shape today’s sound of deep house, with releases on Chicago deep label Guidance (“Calm & Chaos EP” – yes that’s an R. Kelly sample on Freaky!) and French imprint Distance (Dance 2000 parts 1+2) and his own Alleviated imprint.
Fast forward to the Get Physical Music party at WMC ’07 and Dixon playing insanely deep drug music at 7am. First of all Larry Heard’s deep 909 chicago acid sound is all over most of the tracks played at the party. Second of all Heard’s newest track (which actualy dropped last October on Alleviated) comes in with a deep acid bassline and the best vocal of the conference and everyone hits the roof. Amazing.
