DJ Sun X ColdKrushCuts

DJ Sun X ColdKrushCuts

We got the debut EP from Houston’s DJ Sun from the good folks at Giant Step (who killed it with their Sunset Soirees at The Delano during WMC) right before we left for conference, but when I finally got a listen this morning there were 2 tracks that jumped right out at me…

DJ Sun ft. Jessica Zweback – Ten

It was perfect timing when I put these on because they sound so much like the CD I’ve been bumping in the whip: Ninja Tune‘s classic mix called ColdKrushCuts. There’s a story behind this CD for me, because when it came out in ’97 I was listening to a ton of Ninja Tune beats. The label’s style of chilled-out-cut-up-experimental-jazz-hip-hop was a perfect mix of my jazz/hip-hop roots with the house/jungle sounds I was DJing at the time. Bottom line: I love sample based music and no one does it better than the Ninjas. Unfortunately I lost the CD and didn’t get my hands on a copy until I stumbled on one at TTLab on a recent trip to NYC. I scooped it up and had been listening to the Coldcut/DJ Food mix for awhile, but just got to the DJ Krush mix last night and it is so dope…

Which brings us to DJ Sun’s tracks. Both of these tunes could have been on the Krush mix. “Mark’s On The Keys” heavy breakbeats with live keys and percussion is like some next level Herbaliser shit. I can’t wait to kick it to this one when the sun finally comes out in Boston. The other track “Ten” is even deeper and keeps the breaks going while adding more live instrumentation for a seriously mysterious vibe. Both these tracks bring out the serious nostalgia factor for me while also pushing forward in new directions, I’ll def be keeping my eye out for the dude Sun.
