Dude, I don’t have a camera… I know, I suck, but I did the best I could with my blackberry to capture the moment. So here is what i’ve got for a photo documentary of Soul Clap’s trip to Winter Music in SOUTH BEACH!
This years theme was definitely my busted foot. I don’t even want to go into too much detail about how this happened, but one minute I was fine, and then I was on crutches all week. Oh, yeah, it happened in Boston too… Pathetic…
We stayed at the WMC hotel, which was real far up Collins. Good and Bad: Bad, cuz it was far from the action… good, cuz it was far from spring break AND because of a LINE UP of DJs and events that, just like the rest of WMC, was non-stop. Our first night, Tuesday, Danny Tenaglia was on the 18th floor. You could hear the Subwoofers from our room! Dopeness… What a performer, Danny got crazy with the spotlights and dropped an exclusive re-edit of some original Gorgio Moroder track – ENERGY EQUALS… MC SQUAAAARED…
Early to rise on Wednesday, the day was jam packed with panels about music marketing, digital distribution and star studded discussion about remix techniques featuring Kaskade, Albert Cabrera, Maurice Joshua and 80’s electro DON
Lunch, a poolside chill-out, and off to big up our boys Sergio Santos and Pat Fontes at “we’re all friends here”. Unfortunately, after about an hour, we had no friends there… haha SORRY GUYS… So it was off to feel that Detroit vibe at Hi-Tek Soul @ Pearl (Nikki Beach upstairs) with a monster line up – Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Stacey Pullen and Lee Burridge! Dispite a small crowd, a promoter who was M.I.A. and a busted turntable, these guys beat the place up for what felt like a private party… Boston, look out for Derrick May most likely in June, believe we’re working on it…
Ok, word, met George Clinton, I know crazy… I promise he wouldn’t remember anything, but amazing… He was sitting on a panel about artist management and told a story about how in the 70’s, he tried to buy a spaceship and then they brought it to the gig, but the roof collapsed and so he got a crane for the other side of town and drove it to the show, where 40,000 people awaited him and Bootsy… I’m like, woah, hell yeah Starchild…
I had enough of the panels, so it was off to show some love to our boy Tanner Ross, who remixed “Who’s afraid of Detroit”
and was playing the Dirty Bird records party on a rooftop in the thick of it. SICK party… Music was JUMPIN, Tanner murdered it with a Wu-Tang bootleg, the place was full of sexyness, of course Cnyce had to sit it out… All i know is that Justin Martin is a maniac and Claude Von Stroke delivered a set that sounded like synths made of whirring table saws and the attack of the killer bees
. Respect. Total Respect.
The Dirty Bird girls came with us to Jerry’s Dinner, it was comedy, except they called me “Gimpy”. WTF?
From there on out, Thursday pretty much sucked until around 3a when we rolled up to Studio A (Funktion 1 soundsystem, sickness) for the GET PHYSICAL party. Definitely the highlight of the week. Missed Heidi and another set from Claude Von Stroke, but after a 30 min wait on line (they let Steve Lawler in before Soul Clap, weak!) we got to see Booka Shade live!. Wow, crowd was WAY into it. Then came Jesse Rose followed by the DEEPNESS of Dixon and finally M.A.N.D.Y. until 10a. Soul Clap was there, crutches and all, steady thizzin and feeling the vibes. SO FUTURE, so PHYSICAL! Loved it loved it loved it! Oh, and by this point, my foot was done!
ARG, couldn’t sleep! Shook it off and stumbled our way to the DELANO where Giant Step was holding some afternoon deepness courtesy of Jazzanova, Ame (is it pronounced Amei or Ahm, they kept saying ahm, sounds wack… I say Amei) and Turntables on the Hudson. We met our boy Paulo and chilled with his peoples on a bed, where we drank pink champagne and maxed out SO HARD!
The day went by quick, no suprise and soon it was time pack it up, cuz our flight to Boston was at 7:30a. I know its weak, but if Soul Clap’s gotta gig, Soul Clap’s gotta work!
Inspiration, Planet Earth, is the best present we could bring home to you. Can’t wait to get in the studio and spill all this goodness onto my computer!
Till next year Miami, peace out!
